UPDATED! As all of our oxygen therapy clients have cancelled or rescheduled from Tuesday morning, the Centre will be closing at 11.00 a.m. after the morning circuit class has finished. BMSTC Christmas Party, 19th December!
The BMSTC Christmas party will be held in the gym on Thursday 19th December from 1pm - 3pm. Light buffet provided and entertainment from the Clarinet Group from the Trinity Concert Band! Everyone welcome, no need to RSVP but please do bring a bottle of your choice!
The Christmas Cracker Fun Run!
The Christmas Cracker Fun run in aid of BMSTC last Sunday at Beale Park! Hazel, one of our Physiotherapists, volunteered (!!) to dress up as the Christmas Pudding for the children to chase and try to catch in their 5k race!! Here she is running through the snow!!! Lost car keys!!
LOST KEYS - AN APPEAL
Robin Bootle lost his car ignition key and door key while at the Centre on Friday 6th December.
We have turned the building upside down trying to find them, but without success.
It's possible that someone has picked them up without realising and I would be grateful if they could be returned to the Centre.
The keys are linked on the same ring. One is an ordinary Yale key, the other is a Fiat ignition key with a black plastic bit containing a remote control knob.

New Classes for people with MS in Wokingham!
As part
of the Wokingham borough council’s long term condition activity programme, two
new Pilates and Yoga classes are starting in the New Year, specifically for
people with MS. The classes will be led by a fully qualified instructor
and are suitable for all abilities, consisting of exercises which can be done
either seated or on the mat.
Pilates
A weekly Pilates class will start
on Wednesday 8th January from 3.30 – 4.30pm in the Live Well rehab
gym, Loddon Valley Leisure Centre, Lower Earley. This will be led by Anne
Holland and exercises can be done seated or on the mat.
Yoga
An 8 week course will start on
Thursday 9th January from 12.15 – 1.15pm in the small hall at St
Crispin’s Leisure Centre, Wokingham, led by Ros Drewett. As with Pilates, the exercises can be done
either seated or on the mat.
Tai Chi
In addition to Pilates and Yoga,
there is a weekly Tai Chi class taking place every Wednesday from 1.30 – 2.30pm
at the Live Well rehab gym, Loddon Valley Leisure Centre, Lower Earley.
This is open to anyone who has a long term condition and is taught by Tai Chi
Instructor Brian Hill. The class is
beneficial for both mobility and relation and can be done either sitting or
standing. The last class before
Christmas is on Wednesday 18th December, re-starting on Wednesday 4TH
December 2014.

Sporting dinner raises more than £3,000 for Berkshire MS Therapy Centre
Legendary sports commentator John Motson was the star attraction at a glittering sporting dinner last week.
Organised by the Reading FC Former Players Association (FPA), the special event was held in aid of the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre.

Windows XP
Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows XP after
April 8th 2014. You can continue to use Windows XP, but your
computer might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. You may be
able to upgrade your old PC to Windows 7 or 8 but it is quite a lot of work. To
be fair Windows XP is now 12 years old, which is a long time for Microsoft to
have supported a system.
A New PC
1. Assess your needs:
Most people’s needs are simple i.e. email, internet, word processing and any
new pc that you buy would be able to satisfy them. You need some advice if you
want to store and edit lots of photos and videos or play games with 3D
graphics.
2. The future of computing: Tablets and smartphones are now all touchscreen and the future for Windows based systems is touchscreen. This interface to Windows is completely different to the old Windows XP interface. You will have to learn something new but it won't be more demanding than learning how to use a tablet. And underneath, there will still be some familiar bits - like the word processing.
3. New Hardware: The traditional desktop with separate box and screen is obsolete and has been replaced by the all-in-one and other form factors. There is so much more choice now, in laptops, tablets which convert to laptops and all-in-ones of various screen sizes that I would suggest you go to a large retailer e.g. PC World (at Reading Gate Retail Park) or John Lewis and see which one you like. We have an all-in-one at the BMSTC café area running Windows 8, so you can try before you buy.
4. A Step too far?: If you find that you really can't cope with the new touchscreen interface, you can always install a little program that makes your Windows 8 PC looks like a Windows 7 PC (and not too different to the old XP interface) but still retains the benefits of Windows 8.

TB vaccine 'could help prevent MS'

BMSTC Garden Project
Some of you may be wondering why a digger and a skip have arrived in the garden at the rear of the gym. I have been heading up a project to revitalise the area. We have had a design done professionally, and we have a team of landscape gardeners who will terrace the area, add a raised bed for members which is scented and tactile. There will be a waterfall going down into the ex...isting pond. We are aiming to make this area tranquil. There is nothing like running water to soothe the senses.
David and I are doing the planting plan, and we would like any suggestions by members for particular plants which have a particular meaning for them, and we will do our best to incorporate these into the garden.

MS Trust working to safeguard MS nurses' posts
Over the past few months, the MS Trust has been approached by a number of MS specialist nurses whose services are under threat.
The threats range from downgrading of their posts, cuts to the number of nurses in the team or withdrawing funding for the service. In the drive to cut costs, the competence and experience of specialist nurses and the difference they make to people with MS needs to be proved to NHS managers and commissioners of services. Oxford Road Roadworks from Saturday 26th October!
Advance warning of possible delays! A small section of the Oxford Road will be closed from Saturday for up to 10 days for emergency sewer repairs. A diversion will be in place to avoid the section between Beecham Road and St Georges Street. Access to the Centre will be available but you may need to allow extra time for your journey. MS Trust disappointed with Government decision.
The MS Trust is dismayed and disappointed that the Government has announced it will not change the very controversial threshold for the enhanced mobility element of Personal Independence Payment of only being able to walk up to 20 metres, assisted or unassisted. For more click here.

Thank you to all who came to the Crabtree and Evelyn event last night in the Oracle. It was a great evening. event. The staff were amazing we had drinks nibbles and hand treatments. We all went home with a lovely goody bag and we held a raffle for 4 lovely prizes donated by the store. We raised £135.00 on ticket sales and £57.00 on the raffle, £11.56 in the collecting tin and we are waiting to hear how much we made on our 15 per cent of sales.

Berkshire Health and Well-Being Social Enterprises are delighted to announce that West Berkshire Therapy Centre's specialist exercise and rehab gym is expected to open in the Spring of 2014 and the hunt for suitable premises is on! This isbecause the project Board has now raised £80k and a final big push is under way to raise the balance needed to set up and run the service. Laquinimod reduces brain volume loss
A recently published study has reported that people taking laquinimod had lower rates of brain volume loss and tissue damage shown by various MRI markers, when compared with placebo. Read more here.
